"Nate and I left Arajuno at 9:30, returned approximately 11:10. Today we used same loudspeaker as before with new microphone and mouthpiece to cut out motor noise. Much better hearing - more power. I used phrases which mean - “I love you” - “We are going to give you a pot” - and “we are going to give you a macheti [sic]” and also Quichua phrases “we are your friends” “we love you” “don’t be afraid.” No fear manifested but rather a delighted spirit some jumping + waving - perhaps understanding?"
Account book, green, lined paper written with blue ink. 300 pages. December 10, 1952 through December 16, 1955. Journal entitled, “A Record,” kept by Ed McCully from the time he sailed from the United States to Ecuador until shortly before he left to help set up the camp on Palm Beach. There are relatively few entries, only 41 pages in the front and three additional pages (200, 298, 299). The bulk of the entries (pages 17 through 41) cover McCully’s descriptions of his flights with Nate Saint (and sometimes Jim Elliot) over the collection of Waorani huts that Saint had discovered; also described is their use of the bucket drop and other means to establish contact. The quote above is from the entry for November 5, 1955. From BGC Archives, Collection 687, Box 1, Folder 1. |
